Summary   A teaching resource aimed at animal technologists and research workers caring for and working with laboratory animals. Euthanasia is defined as, "a gentle and easy death" and the first section covers the general principles which will enable this to be achieved. The second sections deals with specific methods of euthanasia suitable for many commonly used laboratory species. Whilst based on legislation regulating the use of laboratory animals within the United Kingdom (Schedule 1 to the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986) the methods of euthanasia demonstrated are those widely used in laboratories throughout the world including: overdose of anaesthetics by injection, inhalation and immersion, exposure to a rising concentration of carbon dioxide, dislocation of the neck, concussion of the brain. Also briefly covers methods suitable for foetal, larval and embryonic forms.
